Carbonite launches online backup service for the Mac
- Mac users can now secure their data online with Carbonite
- Simple automatic backup solution ensures data is safe from disaster, theft or hard drive failure.
London, 16th March 09
— Carbonite, the leading provider of online backup services to
consumers and small businesses, today released a version of Carbonite
Online Backup for Macs.
Carbonite automatically backs up the
irreplaceable data stored on a user’s hard drive to its secure servers
over a broadband connection. With Carbonite, data is protected from
theft, natural disaster or hard drive failure. Carbonite provides users
with an unlimited amount of backup space for just $54.95 per year.
Carbonite is a ‘set and forget’ programme that once initial back up has
been done, runs in the background looking for new and edited files on a
Mac’s hard drive. When a new file is identified, Carbonite
automatically queues it for backup, with no input required from the
user. Carbonite features include:
- Simple Interface:
Carbonite integrates with the Mac operating system, so it looks and
feels just like part of the computer. Mac users can easily check the
status of their backup by opening the Carbonite Preference Pane through
System preferences. Under the Backup tab, users are able to see coloured
dots on every file indicating whether or not the file is included in
the backup and if that backup is up-to-date. Green dots show backed up
files, green doughnuts show folders partially selected for backup,
yellow dots indicate files queued for backup and red dots indicate the
file is not selected for backup
- Encryption and Security:
Carbonite is a highly secure backup method. Before data is transferred,
it is double-encrypted, as well as being password protected so only the
user can access the data stored
- Restoring: To restore, the user
simply installs Carbonite on a new computer and clicks ‘restore’. All
backed up files will then be transferred onto the new machine, and
displayed in the same folder tree as on the original machine. Individual
folders can also be recovered via Carbonite to the same machine they
where lost from
- Incremental backup: Small or minor changes to a
document are constantly backed up, without unnecessary delays. This
means a single updated cell in an Excel spreadsheet will be backed up on
its own, instead of the entire document, greatly improving backup speed
- 30
Day Restore: The originals of newly backed up edited files are kept on
the Carbonite server for 30 days, even if they are deleted from the
user’s hard drive. If a user accidently deletes it can be restored up to
a month after deletion
- Remote access: Data backed up with
Carbonite is accessible from any PC or Mac in the world with an Internet
connection, even if the computer does not have Carbonite installed
- Carbonite
for Mac also has features including a menu bar that allows users to
customise how Carbonite runs on their machine. Putting Carbonite into
‘Low priority’ mode lowers the amount of bandwidth used while ‘Pause for
24 hours’ stops Carbonite for a day
David
Friend, CEO, Carbonite says, "We’re generally recognised as the world
leader in consumer and small business PC backup. Now we’ve introduced a
Mac version that has that same Carbonite ease-of-use and elegance. Our
beta got great reviews from users and we hope to soon be the leader in
Mac backup as well. "
Friend continued, "Recently, my son, a
professional cartoonist and illustrator, lost everything when his Mac
was destroyed in a house fire. I wish that our Mac version had been
available at the time, because the loss of his professional work, client
lists, and accounting files has been an agonising and costly experience
for him. Hopefully we will save many other Mac users from similar
disasters."
Carbonite for Macs is available from the Carbonite website, www.carbonite.co.uk .
A risk-free 15 day trial is also available from the site, which
requires no personal information other than a valid email address to be
submitted.
